Wigwe built tomb before helicopter crash

The former Group Chief Executive Officer of Access Holdings Plc, Dr Herbert Wigwe, built a private tomb for himself before he died in a helicopter crash in the United States, a source has revealed.

Wigwe died alongside his wife, Chizoba, son, Chizi, and the former Group Chairman of the Nigerian Exchange Group Plc (NGX Group), Abimbola Ogunbanjo, in the helicopter crash on February 9, 2024.

The billionaire businessman died at the age of 57.

However, a credible source disclosed that Wigwe built a tomb within the massive expanse of Wigwe International University in Isiokpo, Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

The late banker is the founder of the university located in his country home.

“He built this private cemetery before he started the university. His house here has been designed to have a special gate and walls separated from the university.

“I can tell you that he had a big vision. Very good vision and he was making efforts to ensure that those visions came to a reality. But what I cannot tell you right now is whether those visions will still be achieved.

“It is only the owner of the vision that can implement his visions to the letter. I cannot say if those visions including the university will be accomplished in line with the dreams of the owner of the vision,” the source told Vanguard.

Wigwe, a banker and businessman, became the Group Chief Executive Officer of Access Holdings, succeeding his business partner, Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, in January 2014.

He started his career at Coopers and Lybrand and Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) before joining Access Bank in 2002 as the company’s Deputy Managing Director.

Wigwe died in a helicopter crash on February 9, 2024, in the United States on his way to attend the Super Bowl LVIII championship in Las Vegas.
