The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has announced plans by the FCT Administration to commence the rehabilitation of at least 40 additional schools across Abuja.
Wike disclosed this on Friday during the flag-off of the Transit Way N2 road project, which will connect the Central Area to Wuse District and include two new bridges.
According to him, the initiative will complement the ongoing rehabilitation of 70 schools, out of which 45 have already been completed and furnished.
He added that attention would soon shift to the health sector in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive that every sector be given priority.
“We are going to start again the total rehabilitation of not less than 40 schools after this road project. That will add to the 70 schools already ongoing, with about 45 completed and well furnished.
“We will also begin to look into health, and those in charge must step up to meet the speed I work with,” the minister said.
Wike explained that the N2 project was inspired by efforts of private citizens, whom he described as “elder statesmen,” who had begun making the road motorable. He said the FCT Administration took over the project to ensure its full completion.
The minister stressed that the Transit Way N2 is one of the key projects lined up for commissioning during President Tinubu’s third anniversary.
He tasked the contractor, Levante Construction Company Nigeria Limited, to deliver the project on schedule.
Highlighting the importance of infrastructure, Wike said road networks are central to urban development and attracting investment.
He cited the example of the “Abuja City Walk” project, driven by Dubai investors, as a product of the administration’s focus on infrastructure.
“There cannot be development in any city without good road networks. Road infrastructure attracts investments,” he noted.
