The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, says the members of the Rivers State House of Assembly can impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara if he violates the constitution.

Wike, the immediate past governor of Rivers State, said this at a media chat in Abuja on Wednesday, March 12, 2025.

The minister, who has since been in a rift with his successor, stated that removing Fubara would not be a criminal offence.

Wike said: “If you have committed an offence to be impeached, what’s wrong? Is it a criminal offence? It’s provided in the constitution. Am I a member of the Assembly?

“If you have committed an infraction of the constitution, and the Assembly deems it fit to say you should be impeached.

“I have heard people say, ‘Oh, if they impeach him, there will be a breakdown of law and order.’ Rubbish! Nothing will happen.”

Pro-Wike lawmakers stop Fubara from entering Rivers Assembly quarters

Rivers State has been engulfed in a political crisis over a power tussle between Wike and Fubara.

The rift has polarised the Rivers State House of Assembly with lawmakers loyal to both political gladiators electing different Speakers to lead the House.

Lawmakers loyal to Wike dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC), while some commissioners loyal to the minister quit Fubara’s cabinet.

On February 28, the Supreme Court affirmed the judgement of a Federal High Court that barred the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Accountant-General of the Federation from releasing statutory monthly allocations to Rivers state.

The Supreme Court had ordered the CBN to withhold Rivers’ financial allocation until Fubara presents the state appropriation bill to the lawmakers.

The apex court also nullified the local government election held in Rivers State on October 5, 2024.
