Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has mocked the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, over former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s endorsement of the presidential flag-bearer of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, for the 2023 presidency.
Obasanjo, in a letter addressed to Nigerians on Sunday, said Obi has an edge when “one compares their character, antecedent, their understanding, knowledge, discipline, and vitality that they can bring to bear and the great efforts required to stay focused on the job particularly looking at where the country is today and with the experience on the job that I personally had.”
He also described the former governor of Anambra State as “a needle with thread attached to it from North and South and he may not get lost.”
Speaking at the flag-off of the construction of a road in Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State on Monday, Governor Wike said the endorsement of Obi by Obasanjo means “there is something fundamentally wrong”.
The governor said: “I worked with somebody for eight years and we are using it as a campaign that when we were in office we did well. Then my boss is recommending another person, not me? Something is fundamentally wrong.
“Go and hold your boss who recommended another person other than you.
“I was praying that Obasanjo should not say anything. When I saw the letter last night, I was touched. If your principal cannot recommend you, then there is something fundamentally wrong.
“After all, you people went to lobby your principal to recommend you. It took your principal a long time but he wrote a letter to all Nigerians, saying, ‘Look, I am not too comfortable’. I am not bothered about other people but this one (Obasanjo) worked with you and he knows.”
Atiku was vice president during Obasanjo’s administration between 1999 and 2007.
