Wike to PDP govs: I’ll put fire in your states for interfering in Rivers crisis

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has warned the governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against interfering in the political crisis in Rivers State.

Wike, the immediate past governor of Rivers State, said “I will put fire” in states governed by the PDP governors for declaring their support for Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The minister has since been in a rift with his successor Fubara.

The PDP governors reiterated their support for Fubara during a meeting in Taraba State on August 23, 2024, and called for a review of the party congress outcome to restore Fubara’s leadership role in Rivers State.

Speaking at the PDP state congress in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, on Saturday, August 31, Wike declared his readiness to cause a political crisis in the PDP governors’ states if they tried to interfere in the party’s affairs in the South-South state.

The former governor said: “Let me assure all of you, not while we live will anybody take away the structure of the PDP from us. But let me tell people, I hear some governors who say they will take over the structure and give back to somebody.

“I pity those governors because I will put fire in their states. When God has given you peace, you say you don’t want peace. Anything you see you take.

Wike begs Nigerians: Don’t be angry, hunger’ll reduce soon

“Because I heard they got some money from a signature bonus, and so their heads are getting big that you will put a hand in my own state. Prepare because I have the capacity to also do the same thing in your own state.

“Whether you are from Bauchi, I don’t give a damn, whichever state you are from, as far as I know, that you are trying to put yourself in Rivers State, your hand will get burnt, and you will never sleep in your state.”

Rivers State has been engulfed in a political crisis over a power tussle between Governor Fubara and Wike.

The rift has polarised the Rivers State House of Assembly with lawmakers loyal to both political gladiators electing different Speakers to lead the House.

Lawmakers loyal to Wike dumped the PDP for the All Progressives Congress (APC), while some commissioners loyal to the minister have quit Fubara’s cabinet.
