Wike: Why I didn’t support Peter Obi in 2023 election

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has disclosed the reasons for not supporting the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, during the 2023 general election.

Wike, a leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), supported President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 election.

Speaking during a press briefing in Abuja on Friday, April 18, 2025, the minister described Obi as a “social media candidate” who had no chance to win the 2023 presidential election.

Wike said: “He (Obi) has no chance to win the election.

“I don’t go to where you see people like this kind of social media candidates. I don’t do social media candidate.”

Wike added that his decision to support Tinubu in the 2023 election was the right call.

Wike: I wanted Fubara’s removal but Tinubu saved him with emergency rule declaration

He stated: “PDP is not ready, and it’s very obvious.

“You don’t need to like me, what I’m saying is that, is it going to help the party? All this power struggle is not going to help us.

“In 2023, I stood firm that I won’t support the PDP candidate. As of 2023, APC was down because the Buhari government was not doing well.

“A decision had to be taken on who to support, and when I looked at it, Atiku was not an option, so it’s a no-go area.”
