Woman seeks divorce over N50 feeding allowance in Kaduna

A hearing-impaired woman, Hauwa’u Bello, has asked a Shari’a court in Magajin Gari, Kaduna State, to dissolve her marriage over alleged neglect and starvation by her husband, Usman Shuaibu.

Appearing before the court on Wednesday, Bello—who spoke through a sign language interpreter, Aisha Sulaiman—told the court that her husband only gives her N50 for food and has failed to cater to her needs since they got married in 2016.

She said her parents initially provided food for the couple, but the problem began when the support stopped.

“He is a tailor, yet he refuses to take responsibility for the home. When I had our child, he couldn’t even pay the hospital bills.

“His mother had to step in,” Bello said.

She added that efforts by both families to resolve the matter failed, prompting her decision to seek divorce.

Shuaibu, however, denied the allegations made by his wife.

Presiding over the matter, Judge Malam Kabir Muhammad, ordered both parties to return to court on August 25 with their parents or guardians for further hearing.
