World Cup qualifiers: Arokodare’s strike earns Super Eagles win over Rwanda

Super Eagles of Nigeria defeated resilient Rwanda 1-0 in a crucial 2026 World Cup qualifier on Saturday.

Wolves forward Tolu Arokodare scored the lone goal for the Super Eagles, keeping Nigeria’s slim hopes of reaching the 2026 World Cup.

The match, played at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, attracted a lively home crowd, who cheered the Super Eagles on from the opening whistle to the last.

Nigeria dominated early possession with Wilfred Ndidi and Alex Iwobi dictating midfield play, while Victor Osimhen’s runs consistently stretched Rwanda’s organised defensive structure.

Ademola Lookman tested goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari in the 15th minute with a fierce strike, forcing a smart save to deny Nigeria an early breakthrough.

Despite Nigeria’s pressure, Rwanda almost stunned the home side when Jacques Tuyisenge forced Stanley Nwabali into a strong save after a quick counterattack in the 34th minute.

Both teams went into the break goalless, with Nigeria left frustrated by missed chances and Rwanda satisfied with their disciplined defensive display.

Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle responded by introducing Moses Simon after the restart, a change that injected pace on the flanks and unsettled Rwanda’s backline.

Taking advantage of several rebounds in Rwanda’s area, Arokodare shot a ball that was bouncing around in the visitors’ area and scored the only goal of the match.

The goal sparked jubilation among Nigerian supporters, with Arokodare celebrating passionately as teammates surrounded him near the corner flag.

The final whistle confirmed Nigeria’s hard-fought victory, securing three important points in their quest to qualify for the next FIFA World Cup.

Nigeria now in third position with 10 points will face a crucial away fixture against table leaders South Africa with 16 points on Tuesday.
