World Environment Day: Chevron reaffirms commitment to climate action, environmental sustainability

Chevron Nigeria and Mid-Africa (NMA) has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental stewardship and climate action as the world marks World Environment Day on June 5, 2026.

The NMA stated that the global observance, themed “A Global Call for Climate Action,” underscores the need for collective efforts to address climate-related challenges affecting communities, economies and ecosystems worldwide.

According to the company, climate change continues to manifest through rising temperatures, flooding, heatwaves and water stress, impacting livelihoods and natural systems across the globe.

It added that these challenges have reinforced the importance of environmental protection as a key pillar of sustainable development.

Chevron, in a statement issued on Thursday by Oduselu Olusoga, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, Chevron Nigeria/Mid-Africa Region, said it remains committed to protecting the environment while providing affordable, reliable and increasingly cleaner energy to support human progress.

The Chairman and Managing Director of Chevron Nigeria and Mid-Africa, Jim Swartz, said the theme of this year’s celebration aligns with the company’s environmental principles, which include integrating environmental considerations into decision-making, reducing carbon intensity, operating responsibly and ensuring proper site stewardship.

“Guided by our commitment to environmental protection and our awareness of the challenges posed by climate change, we continue to integrate responsible business practices throughout the lifecycle of our assets, from design and development to operations and retirement,” Swartz said.

According to him, Chevron’s climate strategy is driven by several operational priorities, including reducing carbon intensity through improved efficiency and disciplined energy use, cutting routine gas flaring while advancing gas development initiatives, and managing methane emissions through leak detection, repair programmes and vent-gas capture measures.

Swartz added that the company also supports robust emissions measurement and reporting systems to promote transparency, accountability and compliance with regulatory requirements.

Swartz stressed the importance of biodiversity conservation, noting that Chevron has a long history of collaborating with governments, regulators, communities, industry groups and conservation organisations on environmental initiatives in areas where it operates.

He said the company would continue to engage stakeholders and support initiatives that promote environmental awareness and practical actions toward a more sustainable future.

As part of its environmental conservation efforts, Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL), in partnership with the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF), established the Lekki Conservation Centre in 1992. The 78-hectare facility serves as a sanctuary for the rich biodiversity of the Lekki Peninsula and a centre for environmental research and education.

The company has also supported the NCF’s annual postgraduate research scholarship programme for PhD students in environmental and conservation studies since 2005.

Chevron equally sponsors initiatives aimed at promoting environmental awareness, including the annual S.L. Edu Memorial Lecture and the Walk for Nature programme organised by the Lagos State Government and the NCF.
