National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, has left Nigeria for a two-week vacation after what the ruling party described as an intense first year in office.
Yilwatda’s absence comes as the APC begins preparations for the 2027 general elections, which the party considers crucial to its continued hold on power and the implementation of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by Abimbola Tooki, Special Adviser to the APC chairman on Media and Information Strategy, the vacation was described as a period for Yilwatda to rest, reflect and prepare for the demands of the next phase of his leadership.
The statement said the chairman had spent the past year undertaking extensive consultations, travelling across the country and holding strategic meetings with key party stakeholders.
Since taking over as national chairman, Yilwatda has worked with the National Working Committee (NWC), state governors, National Assembly members, state party executives, elected officials and other stakeholders on efforts to consolidate the APC’s structures ahead of the 2027 elections.
The party listed the successful conduct of its National Convention, strengthening of internal structures and organisation of primary elections at various levels among the milestones recorded during his tenure.
“These achievements, coming within a relatively short period, have further consolidated the APC’s position as Nigeria’s leading political party and one of Africa’s largest and most formidable political organisations,” the statement said.
The APC said the chairman’s decision to take a break should not be viewed as withdrawal from his responsibilities.
Rather, it described the vacation as “an opportunity to step back briefly from the intensity of day-to-day activities, recharge and reflect on the enormous responsibilities ahead.”
The party said Yilwatda would use the period to consider strategies for the 2027 electoral contest and the next stage of the APC’s organisational development.
He is also expected to use the break to prepare for an upcoming retreat of the National Working Committee, where the party’s leadership is expected to assess its progress, examine emerging challenges and map out strategies for the months ahead.
According to the statement, the retreat will also focus on improving coordination among members of the NWC and strengthening the party’s readiness for the 2027 electoral season.
The APC assured that Yilwatda’s absence from the country would not disrupt the party’s activities, noting that the NWC would continue to perform its functions in accordance with the party’s constitution and established procedures.
“The APC National Chairman remains fully committed to the party and its objectives,” the statement added.
Yilwatda is expected to return after the two-week vacation and resume his official duties.
