Zamfara: Nurses, midwives begin six-day strike over unpaid CONHESS benefits

The Zamfara State chapter of the National Association of Nurses and Midwives (NANM) has begun a six-day warning strike across state-owned general hospitals to protest the government’s failure to implement the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS).

State Chairman of the union, Sani Shehu, said the action became necessary after repeated appeals to the government yielded no results.

He explained that while doctors in the state were placed on the new Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) in June, health workers under CONHESS were left out.

According to him, the union had made several follow-ups up to August without any positive response.

The strike, which commenced on Saturday, follows an earlier seven-day warning strike declared on September 11 but suspended within 24 hours after government intervention.

Shehu said the suspension only covered one day, leaving six days outstanding, which members are now observing until Tuesday.

He warned that if the state government fails to address their demands, the union will proceed on an indefinite strike.
