10 states with lowest cooking gas prices in Nigeria — NBS

Cooking gas prices across Nigeria have continued to fluctuate, with some states now offering noticeable relief to households struggling with the high cost of living.

According to the latest data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), ten states recorded the lowest average prices for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) as of August 2025, following a nationwide decline in costs compared to the previous month.

The report shows that the average retail price for refilling a 12.5kg cylinder of cooking gas dropped by 21.42% month-on-month, falling from ₦20,609.48 in July 2025 to ₦16,195.07 in August 2025. However, on a year-on-year basis, prices still recorded a 4.13% increase, compared to ₦15,552.56 in August 2024.

At number ten on the list of states with the cheapest cooking gas is Kogi State, where refilling a 12.5kg cylinder cost an average of ₦15,904.50 in August 2025.

This represents a 22.62% decline from July’s average price of ₦20,555.02, but a 10.72% increase year-on-year from ₦14,364.85 recorded in August 2024.

Kogi’s growing gas infrastructure has played a key role in driving down local prices. Earlier in January, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) constructed five mini-LNG plants in Ajaokuta, aimed at boosting domestic LPG supply.

The project, implemented in partnership with NNPC Prime LNG, NGML/Gasnexus LNG, BUA LNG, Highland LNG, and LNG Arete, has a combined production capacity of 97 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscf/d).

Industry experts say this expansion has helped stabilize supply and could position Kogi as one of Nigeria’s emerging gas hubs, particularly with the presence of multiple LPG plants and retailers in Lokoja and surrounding areas.

The NBS is expected to release a full breakdown of all ten states with the lowest LPG prices in its forthcoming detailed report.
