A devastating auto accident on Christmas Day has claimed the lives of 11 people, while nine others — including the driver — were injured in Beguwa village along Sankara Road in the Ringim Local Government Area of Jigawa State.
The crash occurred around midday on Thursday as many Christian worshippers were celebrating the holiday across the state.
According to eyewitnesses, the vehicle was being driven at high speed when the driver lost control, causing it to crash violently.
Locals described chaotic scenes as people rushed to the scene, with some victims trapped beneath the wreckage.
Several witnesses also noted that the vehicle appeared poorly maintained and may have had brake problems, which contributed to the loss of control.
The Jigawa State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Shi’isu Adam, confirmed the tragic incident and said authorities are investigating the cause of the accident.
He added that the injured were taken to a hospital for treatment, and once the driver recovers, he will be questioned and could face prosecution.
Police also used the occasion to urge motorists to drive safely during the festive period, when road traffic tends to increase.
