No fewer than 11 people are feared to have been killed after an attack on Zaranga community in Gombi Local Government Area of Adamawa State on Monday.
Residents said the attackers stormed the village in the early hours of the day, opening fire and setting several houses ablaze.
One of the residents, who spoke by telephone but requested anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the media, said the death toll could rise as several residents were still missing.
He said 11 bodies had been recovered, while search teams and security personnel were combing nearby forests in an effort to locate those unaccounted for.
“For now, 11 dead bodies have been recovered. Many people are still missing. Search teams and security personnel are in the forest searching for the missing people,” the resident said.
Another resident recounted the loss suffered by his family, saying his wife and two other relatives were among those killed during the attack.
“My wife and two of my family members were also killed during the early morning invasion of my village,” he said.
The identities of the attackers could not be independently verified, although residents alleged that Boko Haram was responsible for the assault.
Attempts to get an official account of the incident from the Adamawa State Police Command were unsuccessful.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Nguroje, did not respond to repeated telephone calls seeking confirmation of the attack and reported casualties as of the time of filing this report.
