2025 WASSCE: WAEC withholds 192,000 results over malpractice

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has withheld the results of over 192,000 candidates over their alleged involvement in examination malpractice during the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates.

The Head of WAEC Nigeria, Dr Amos Dangut, made this known while announcing the release of the 2025 WASSCE results at a press conference in Lagos on Monday, August 4, 2025.

Dangut, who expressed worry at the rising trend of examination malpractice, results of 192,089 candidates, representing 9.75 per cent of the total number of candidates, were withheld over various reported cases of malpractice.

According to him, the figure represented a 2.17 per cent decline compared to the 11.92 per cent recorded in the 2024 edition of the same examination.

“In spite of this improvement, WAEC expresses serious concern over the persistent use of mobile phones in examination halls and the growing instances of organised cheating in some schools,” Dangut said.

Dangut disclosed that investigations into the reported cases were ongoing, saying the final decisions would be made by the appropriate WAEC committee.

“Affected candidates will be notified through their respective schools once the committee concludes its review,” he said.

Dangut stressed that WAEC has zero tolerance for examination malpractice, adding that schools, teachers, supervisors, and students involved in it were doing a disservice to the educational system.

He stated that all hands must be on deck to sanitise the system.

Dangut also assured that the released results being uploaded on WAEC’s website and would be accessible within the next 12 hours.

The WAEC boss added: “Additionally, candidates are encouraged to apply for their digital certificates, which will be made available 48 hours after checking their results online.
