2027: Obi faults Tinubu’s alleged distribution of campaign vehicles

The Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has criticised the alleged distribution of Hilux trucks and Hummer buses by the President Bola Tinubu administration for 2027 campaign activities, describing the move as a clear display of insensitivity amid widespread hardship.

This follows reports that the vehicles were distributed to state coordinators of a political structure known as the Renewed Hope Ambassadors ahead of the 2027 general election.

Obi, in a statement shared on X on Thursday, December 4, 2025, said it was disturbing that government resources were being diverted to luxury vehicles while millions of Nigerians face severe economic distress.

The former two-term governor of Anambra State noted that the country is battling soaring hunger, escalating unemployment, and persistent insecurity, yet leadership appears focused on political mobilisation rather than urgent national needs.

“At a time when Nigerians are struggling with hunger, unemployment, and insecurity, the decision of any government to allocate limited public resources for distributing luxury vehicles is not only insensitive but also represents a serious moral failure,” he stated.

Obi noted that leaders should be focused on addressing urgent national needs — feeding the hungry, improving healthcare, providing jobs for millions of youths, and securing communities — rather than mobilising for political campaigns.

Obi said: “It is disheartening that, at a time when children are dropping out of school because their families cannot afford tuition fees, when mothers are dying during childbirth due to a lack of basic medical supplies, and when insecurity is tearing families apart, the response from those in power is to purchase and distribute luxury vehicles rather than urgently addressing the needs of the people.

“This is not governance. It reflects a profound insensitivity and an abuse of public trust disguised as a political strategy. It betrays the essence of public service, which should always be about serving the people rather than staging political publicity.”

Calling for a shift towards accountable governance and prudent management of resources, the former governor insisted that Nigeria cannot continue on a path characterised by waste and political showmanship.

Obi added: “At times like this, we must recognise that Nigeria cannot continue on a path of wastefulness, insensitivity, and misplaced priorities. Our citizens deserve leadership grounded in empathy, prudence, and accountability.

“Regardless of how bleak the situation may appear today, I firmly believe that a New Nigeria is not only necessary; it is possible.”
