Lagos police detain ASP after stray bullet kills girl, injures one other

The Lagos State Police Command has detained one of its officers, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Omotayo Olajide, after a firearm he discharged killed a young girl and injured another girl during an operation in the Ajegunle area of the state.

The incident occurred between 9:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. in the Nosamu area of Ajegunle on Thursday, November 5, 2026.

The Command, in a statement issued on Saturday by its spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, identified the deceased as Omole Taiwo.

Adebisi said preliminary investigations revealed that ASP Olajide was deployed following a distress call over a violent clash between two rival groups, the Nosamu Boys and the Alayabiagba Boys, who were fighting over toll collection.

Adebisi said members of the rival groups were armed with cutlasses and other dangerous weapons when the police responded to the incident.

She added that during the operation, the officer discharged his firearm and the bullet struck the two girls.

The police spokesperson disclosed that the victims were immediately rushed to Ajeromi General Hospital, while one of them was later referred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, where she died.

Adebisi stated: “The other child is receiving medical attention and is in stable condition.
