The Federal Government, in partnership with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), has launched a Smart School Protection Strategy to strengthen security across schools nationwide.
Unveiled during a strategic engagement in Abuja on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, the federal government said the initiative underscores the administration’s zero tolerance for attacks on schools and its commitment to guaranteeing the safety of every Nigerian child.
The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, described school protection as a non-negotiable priority.
Alausa announced the establishment of a dedicated Department of Safe School Initiative to coordinate policy, monitoring, and inter-agency collaboration, with NSCDC serving as the lead operational agency.

According to him, key components include deployment of smart security solutions such as emergency panic alert systems, rapid response mechanisms, and enhanced command and control centres to ensure intelligence-driven interventions.
The minister added that the ministry is also advancing sustainable financing models to guarantee consistent implementation nationwide.
The NSCDC Commandant General, Prof. Ahmed Audi, disclosed that over 60,000 of 81,000 schools lack adequate security infrastructure.
Audi highlighted specialised units that have foiled more than 110 threats.
