The number of ISWAP fighters killed during a failed assault on troops in Malam Fatori has risen to 75, marking one of the most significant recent setbacks for the insurgent group.
Initial reports had placed the death toll at 61 following a coordinated counterattack by troops of Operation Hadin Kai, supported by the Nigerian Air Force.
However, updated battlefield assessments and subsequent clearance operations have pushed the figure higher, with several other fighters believed to have fled with serious injuries.
The attack occurred in the early hours of Wednesday when ISWAP militants advanced on foot toward the 68 Battalion base, reportedly deploying armed drones in a bid to breach military defences.
Sources said the infiltration, launched from the Duguri axis through the Bravo Company frontage, was quickly detected and repelled by troops.
Military officials attributed the outcome to effective coordination between air and ground forces, highlighting the increasing efficiency of joint operations in ongoing counter-insurgency efforts in Nigeria’s North-East.
