Again, gunmen kill 40 in Plateau

Gunmen have killed 40 people during an attack on Zike and Kimakpa communities in the Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State.

It was gathered that the gunmen killed the residents in an attack in the early hours of Monday, April 14, 2025.

A community leader in the area, Wakili Tongwe, disclosed that the attackers invaded the village and shot sporadically at residents who were scampering for safety after hearing gunshots.

The community leader said a team of vigilantes, including himself and some security personnel, were on patrol in another community when the gunmen invaded the village and started shooting.

Tinubu-Buhari partnership and opposition’s desperate search for validation

Tongwe said though the security operatives engaged the assailants and succeeded in repelling the attackers, the damage had been done, with about 36 persons shot dead and four others dying later.

According to him, some other residents sustained gunshot wounds and are receiving treatment at the hospital.

The Acting Coordinator of Operation Rainbow, a state-owned security outfit, Brig.-Gen. Gakji Shipi, confirmed the incident on Monday.

Shipi, who is also the Special Adviser on Internal Security to Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, however, did not confirm the number of persons killed.

He said: “It is unfortunate; this is really a major setback to the peace process in the state.

“Government and security agencies are on top of the situation, and we will soon nip this ugly incidents in bud.”

But the National Secretary of the Irigwe Development Association (IDA), Danjuma Auta, said 47 persons were killed in the attack.

Auta said: “The attacks occurred at about 8:00 p.m. on Sunday.

“It resulted in the deaths of 47 people and left many others injured.

“Many houses were razed down by the attackers, and properties were equally destroyed.”

The attack is coming less than two weeks after over 50 persons were killed in some communities of the Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State.
