Another 2 lawmakers withdraw from Fubara impeachment plot

Two additional members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have joined to plead for leniency to halt planned impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The lawmakers had recently issued impeachment notice to Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Nma Odu, over alleged misconduct.

Barile Nwakoh representing Khana Constituency I and Emilia Amadi representing Obio/Akpor Constituency II joined the plea for leniency on Wednesday, January 14, 2026.

Their effort came barely two days after two lawmakers sued for dialogue.

Nwakoh and Amadi, however, acknowledged that the governor and his deputy committed constitutional infractions, even as they prayed the House for leniency.

Defection: Kwankwaso, Kano govt trade words over coercion

According to the lawmakers, their decision to join in the plea followed interventions by respected leaders and stakeholders within and outside Rivers State.

The House had issued an impeachment notice against Fubara and his deputy, citing gross misconduct as bases for their decision.

The House Minority Leader, Sylvanus Nwankwo, representing Omuma Constituency, and Peter Abbey of Degema Constituency were the first two lawmakers who advocated for leniency on the matter.

The latest plea has invariably reduced the number of lawmakers who initially signed the impeachment notice from 26 to 22.
