‘I miss you,’ D’banj tells late son in emotional tribute

Nigerian singer Daniel Oyebanjo, popularly known as D’banj, has paid an emotional tribute to his late son, Daniel Oyebanjo Jr., saying he still misses him years after his death.

In a post on his X handle on Thursday, the music star reflected on the loss and expressed gratitude for the strength he and his family had found in the years since the tragedy.

“I miss you, Daniel D3rd, my son, and trust me, I can’t imagine how your mother feels, but we are in a safe space now. Thank you… omo baba eh, our family’s star boy,” he wrote.

D’banj added that he believed his late son would be proud of the family, including his mother and two siblings.

“Since you left, but thank you. I’m in a safe space, and so are your mother and your brother and sister. I’m sure you are proud of us,” he added.

The singer also reflected on the lessons he had learnt from his son, expressing love for him and remembering his late uncle, Femi.

“Thank you for showing me what life really is as a whole. Say hi to your Uncle Femi; tell him I miss him too,” he wrote.

He concluded the tribute by reaffirming his love for his son, saying, “Daddy loves you specially, physically, spiritually, and powerfully.”

Daniel Jr. died on June 24, 2018, after drowning in a swimming pool at the singer’s residence in Lagos. He was just over a year old.

At the time, D’banj was reportedly in Los Angeles, United States, attending a music awards event when the incident occurred.

Months after the tragedy, the singer spoke about how he coped with the loss, crediting the support he received from fans for helping him and his family through the difficult period.

Speaking at the end-of-year party of a real estate company in December 2018, D’banj said the incident had tested his strength but that the love shown by his fans had helped him keep going.

“You all know what happened to me recently when I lost my son; it was really a tough time for me. But do you know how I was able to get through it? It was because of you, my fans,” he said.

He added that the support had meant a great deal to him and his family, saying he was grateful to have emerged from the painful experience still standing.
