APC primaries: Desmond Elliot denies stepping down from Lagos Assembly race

The lawmaker representing Surulere Constituency 1 in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Desmond Elliot, has denied stepping down from the race for the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket, insisting that his political ambition remains intact despite speculation to the contrary.

Elliot made this known via a statement issued on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, noting that his earlier comments had been misrepresented.

The lawmaker stressed that his decision reflected restraint and political maturity rather than an abandonment of his candidacy.

He maintained that it was inaccurate for anyone to interpret his position as a withdrawal from the contest, declaring that he remained committed to democratic ideals and the aspirations of his supporters.

“My decision was one of statesmanship and restraint—not a concession, withdrawal, or surrender of my candidacy,” Elliot stated.

The actor-turned-politician also urged party faithful, stakeholders, and members of the public to disregard reports suggesting he had exited the race, describing such narratives as false and misleading.

Elliot stressed that attention should instead be directed toward ensuring transparency, fairness, and justice in the conduct of the APC primary election process.

He also stressed the importance of safeguarding the credibility of the exercise, adding that delegates and legitimate supporters must be allowed to participate without intimidation or obstruction.

He reaffirmed his commitment to the political process and insisted that the integrity of the primary election must be protected at a critical moment for the constituency.
