APC screens 540 aspirants ahead of Lagos LGA congress

The All Progressives Congress in Lagos State has screened 540 aspirants — 27 from each of the state’s 20 local government areas — ahead of its local government congress scheduled for Saturday.

The screening exercise was held at the party’s state secretariat in Ogba, where members of the LGA Ward Congress Committee supervised the process.

Speaking with stakeholders, the committee chairman, Nungji Salama, said the exercise was conducted smoothly and noted that consensus arrangements would be recognised where stakeholders reached agreement. He added that the list of successful candidates would be released after the screening and urged aspirants who might not make the list to remain loyal to the party.

Salama appealed for unity among members, describing Lagos as a pacesetter and commending the state leadership for what he called a seamless preparatory process.

Earlier, the state party chairman, Cornelius Ojelabi, said the screening represented the final stage of preparations for the congress. He emphasised the party’s commitment to transparency, noting that the Independent National Electoral Commission and the media are usually invited to observe its internal exercises.

Ojelabi stressed the importance of compliance with the Electoral Act, particularly for those who would manage party structures at the local government level, and described election into party offices as a call to service.

The congress is expected to produce executive officials across local government and ward structures as part of the party’s internal democratic process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
