The Nigerian Army has deployed 170 Forest Guards to Arewa Local Government Area of Kebbi State as part of efforts to reinforce security in vulnerable communities across the state.
The deployment was operationalised on Tuesday by the General Officer Commanding 8 Division and Commander, Sector 2 of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Major General Bemgba Paul Koughna, during a ceremony held at the Headquarters in Kangiwa, Arewa LGA.
As part of the initiative, the Army donated key logistics items to enhance the effectiveness of the guards, who will operate under military supervision. The support package includes 10 new motorcycles to improve mobility, 170 sleeping kits, and essential food supplies aimed at boosting welfare and operational readiness.
Major General Koughna said the move is designed to strengthen rapid response capabilities, particularly in remote forested areas often exploited by terrorists, bandits, and other criminal elements.
According to him, the motorcycles will expand patrol coverage and reduce response time, while the welfare materials will improve morale among personnel operating in challenging terrains.
He urged the Forest Guards to remain disciplined and professional, stressing that tackling insecurity requires teamwork, synergy, and sustained commitment. He also conveyed the goodwill of the Chief of Army Staff, who cautioned the guards against misuse of their weapons, especially against law-abiding citizens.
Representing Governor Nasir Idris, the Kebbi State Commissioner for Home Affairs and Internal Security, Haliru Aliyu Wasabu, described the deployment as timely and commended the Army for its collaboration with the state government.
He reaffirmed the state’s commitment to working closely with the military and other security agencies to curb banditry and related crimes.
The deployment marks a renewed push by the Nigerian Army and the Kebbi State Government to strengthen community-based security frameworks and consolidate gains in the fight against insecurity in the North-West.
