Army recovers remains of slain personnel in Imo

Troops of the Nigerian Army have recovered the remains of two personnel killed in 2022 while travelling for their traditional wedding in Imo State, bringing closure to a case that has lingered for nearly four years.

The victims—Master Warrant Officer (rtd) Linus Musa Audu and Lance Corporal Gloria Mathew—were reportedly abducted and killed along the Ubaha–Orsu axis by suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network.

The couple had been en route to Gloria’s hometown for their traditional wedding when the attack occurred, turning what was meant to be a celebratory journey into a tragic incident that resonated across military and civilian communities.

Military sources said troops of the 82 Division, working with other security agencies, carried out a targeted search operation on April 24, 2026, based on fresh intelligence about the possible location of the victims’ remains.

During the operation, soldiers reportedly came under attack from armed elements but repelled the assaults and secured the area before proceeding with the search. The troops later discovered shallow graves believed to contain the remains of the deceased personnel.

The remains have since been recovered and will undergo forensic analysis, including DNA verification, before being handed over to their families.

The Nigerian Army said it is committed to giving the fallen personnel a befitting burial with full military honours in recognition of their service and sacrifice.

The incident occurred amid heightened insecurity in Nigeria’s South-East, where attacks on both civilians and security personnel have been linked to activities of armed groups. Authorities say ongoing military operations are aimed at restoring stability and dismantling criminal networks in the region.
