Bauchi set to review creation of  new emirates, districts

The Bauchi State Government has constituted a 41-member committee to review and assess requests for the creation of new Emirates, Chiefdoms, and Districts across the state.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday by Mukhtar Gidado, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Governor Bala Mohammed.

According to Gidado, the committee is composed of respected individuals from diverse backgrounds, including traditional rulers, academics, technocrats, legal professionals, civil society actors, religious leaders, and representatives from security agencies.

The committee will be chaired by Alhaji Hamza Koshe, with Justice Habibu Idris serving as deputy chairman. Among the members are senior government officials, special advisers, and representatives from key organisations such as the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI), Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), and various security services.

Prominent academic and historian, Prof. Ibrahim Garba from the University of Maiduguri, has also been appointed to guide the committee on cultural and historical matters.

The formation of the committee follows a call by the state government urging communities to submit formal requests for the establishment of new traditional institutions. The committee’s mandate includes evaluating these submissions based on principles of equity, socio-political inclusiveness, fairness, historical relevance, and financial sustainability.

Governor Bala Mohammed is scheduled to inaugurate the committee on Thursday, July 3, at the Executive Council Chamber of the Government House, Bauchi, by 10:00 a.m.

Gidado said the move is part of the administration’s commitment to deepening grassroots governance, strengthening traditional institutions, and preserving Bauchi State’s cultural heritage.
