Cryptocurrency platform Binance says it is investigating a major security incident that may have resulted from a compromised DevOps engineer’s laptop, leading to unauthorised withdrawal transactions estimated at about $6.3 billion.

Binance, in a statement on Friday, October 30, 2026, said preliminary findings revealed that an attacker gained access to a service container after compromising the engineer’s device.

However, the company stressed that there is no evidence that wallet private keys were leaked.

The company said it would release a detailed technical report after completing its investigation and verifying all the facts surrounding the breach.

The exchange disclosed that it has already worked with blockchain partners to freeze affected assets, with approximately $3 billion successfully frozen on-chain so far.

To reassure customers, Binance said all user funds remain safe and that every loss arising from the incident would be covered through its Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) and the company’s own financial resources.

The platform also pledged to publish an updated Proof of Reserves once remediation efforts are completed.

As part of its immediate response, Binance said it has temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals while carrying out security checks, revoked the affected address authorisation, and engaged law enforcement agencies and blockchain intelligence partners to trace and recover the stolen assets.
