Buhari disowns Lawan, says he didn’t endorse anybody

President Muhammadu Buhari says he has not appointed any aspirant as the consensus presidential candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Buhari said he is in agreement with the position of the APC northern governors that the presidential candidate of the ruling party must emerge from the southern region of the country.

The Chairman of the Northern Governors Forum and governor of Plateau State, Simon Lalong, quoted Buhari as saying while speaking to State House correspondents after a closed-door meeting with the President at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday.

This is however contrary to reports that the President has anointed the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, as the APC’s consensus presidential candidate.

It was learnt that the APC National Chairman, Sen. Abdullahi Adamu, announced Lawan to President Buhari as the party’s consensus candidate after the National Working Committee (NWC) members held a meeting on Monday.

Speaking to newsmen, Governor Lalong said the President reiterated that he has no anointed candidate in the presidential primaries.

The ruling party’s presidential primaries commenced today, June 6 to 8, 2022.

Lalong further disclosed that the President has requested the governors to have a meeting with the NWC members to resolve the issue of consensus candidate through democratic means.

He stated that the meeting with the NWC has been slated for 5pm on Monday (today).
