Building collapse: Dangote, SON sensitise stakeholders on construction

Dangote Cement Plc, in partnership with Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON), has sensitised block moulders and allied product manufacturers on standardising their work in Kano.

The Northwest Regional Sales Director of Dangote Cement, Aliyu Dan-Aliyu, said the sensitisation aimed at educating the participants on quality and standard of the cement to used in building.

Aliyu said: “A customer who wants to build a house,  doesn’t know the quality or type of cement to use. It is the responsibility of the builder to advise him on the desired cement to use for quality building.

“In this regard, you are the ones responsible to advise them on using Dangote cement because of its quality.

“The artisans and block makers are central to the cement delivery value chain; hence we want to assure you that we will continue to have such interactive sessions, going forward, knowing that it will serve as a feedback mechanism for us in the Dangote Cement Plc.

“I am sure you will be exposed to the Float Test during the course of this workshop in order to be able to detect fake cement, which Dangote does not represent.”

According to SON Kano regional director, Albert Wilberforce, people should patronize quality cement that meets all the requirements for standard building.

Wilberforce noted that “as it would improve economy, provide employment opportunities and reduce criminality in the country.”

Chairman Kano State Block Moulders and Allied manufacturers Association, Umar Faruq Musa, applauded the company for coming up with the program, saying it would go a long way in educating its members on measures to improve their business.

Building collapse has become a recurrent challenge in Nigeria’s housing construction industry.

It would be recalled that The Star, last week, reported that a three-storey building collapsed in Kano near popular textile market leaving one dead and another injured.

The Star
