CAF cancels Edo Queens’ WAFU-B final victory

The Confederation of African Football has ordered the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League WAFU-B qualifying final between Edo Queens and Ghana’s Ampem Darkoa Ladies to resume after ruling that the match was concluded in breach of competition regulations.

The decision overturns Edo Queens’ 4-1 penalty shootout victory after the final ended 2-2 following 90 minutes in Ouagadougou on September 5.

Ampem Darkoa had protested the decision to proceed directly to penalties, arguing that the regulations required the teams to play extra time before a shootout could be used.

CAF upheld the protest, citing Article 72.4 of the WAFU-B regulations, which requires two 15-minute periods of extra time when a final remains level after normal time.

Penalty kicks are to be used only if the scores remain level after the additional 30 minutes.

As a result, CAF ruled that the final must resume from the 2-2 scoreline rather than recognise Edo Queens as winners.

The two teams will now play 30 minutes of extra time, comprising two 15-minute periods, with penalties to follow if neither side breaks the deadlock.

The winner of the rescheduled conclusion will claim the WAFU-B qualification slot for the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League.

Edo Queens had initially secured the regional title after converting four penalties to Ampem Darkoa’s one following the 2-2 draw.

The latest ruling means the Nigerian champions must now return to the contest for another opportunity to secure their place in the continental competition.
