The Nasarawa State High Court on Wednesday remanded an Associate Professor, Fred Ekpa Ayokhai, of the Department of History and International Studies, Federal University of Lafia.

The don and three others were remanded for assaulting a lady in Lafia, the state capital, over disagreement between boyfriends.

The son of the professor was a party to the fight over the girl.

Their remand followed the arraignment of the four suspects at the state High Court by the Nasarawa State Police Command over the offence of assaulting the lady.

Those arraigned alongside the university lecturer in connection with the offence were Emmanuela Ekpa Ayokhai, Bob Praise Ayokhai and Saint-Dan Ayokhai.

They were arranged at the Nasarawa State High Court 1 before Chief Judge of the state, Justice Aisha Bashir-Aliyu.

The Police arranged them on six-count charges of criminal conspiracy, house breaking and criminal force or assault on a woman with intent to cause kidnapping and inflicting physical injury.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, DSP Ramhan Nansel, “The offences listed above are punishable under Section 97 of the Penal Code Law of Northern Nigeria, Section 3(1) & 4 of the Nasarawa State Kidnapping (prohibition) Law, 2019, Section 268 (2) and 354 of the Penal Code Law of Northern Nigeria and Section 3 (1) of the Nasarawa State Violence Against Persons (prohibition) Law, 2019.”

The suspects have been remanded in prison custody pending formal arraignment.

The Nasarawa State Police Command says its operatives have arrested an associate professor with the Department of History and International Studies, Federal University of Lafia, Dr. Fred Ekpa Ayokhai, for assaulting a female student of the institution.

The police had stated that the vehicle belonging to Fred was used in conveying the victim to a location along Kwandere road, Lafia where she was assaulted .

DSP Nansel added that preliminary investigation revealed that Ayokhai and the victim had a misunderstanding over a man named IG.

“The victim accused Emmanuela of snatching her supposed boyfriend and assaulted her. In retaliation, Emmanuela mobilised her family, went after the victim and got her assaulted as well.

“The Commissioner of Police, AIG Adesina Soyemi, has ordered an intensive manhunt for the other fleeing suspects and further directed that those arrested should be charged to court for prosecution upon conclusion of investigation at the State Criminal Department, Lafia,” the police spokesperson stated.
