Court voids PDP national convention, sacks Turaki as chairman

The Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan has set aside the outcome of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national convention held in the Oyo State capital on November 15, 2025, and removed Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN) as the party’s national chairman.

Turaki was declared chairman at the controversial convention attended by delegates from across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), an exercise marred by intense internal wrangling.

Proceedings at the convention were characterised by disputes over zoning of key offices, prolonged accreditation of delegates and allegations of last-minute substitutions and manoeuvres by competing factions. Tension at the venue also led to heightened security presence, with brief interruptions recorded before voting eventually took place.

The court, on Friday, January 30, 2026, ordered Turaki and all other officials produced by the convention to stop parading themselves as members of the party’s national leadership.

The court further affirmed that only the caretaker committee led by Abdulrahman Mohammed, together with Samuel Anyanwu, is recognised as the legitimate National Working Committee of the PDP, pending the conduct of a properly convened national convention.
