The members of the Cross River State House of Assembly have impeached Elvert Ayambem as the Speaker of the House.

The Speaker was removed by 17 lawmakers out of the 25 members of the House over allegations bordering on misappropriation of funds on Wednesday, May 22, 2024.

The impeachment motion was moved by lawmaker representing Calabar South 1 Constituency Effiom Ekarika and seconded by member representing Bekwarra State Constituency Omang Charles Omang.

Ayambem, who represents Ikom 2 State Constituency, was elected Speaker of the House in June 2023.

His impeachment, however, led to a rowdy session as one of the lawmakers made a dash for the mace, which is the symbol of authority of the speaker.

The lawmaker with the mace refused to let go, leading to a struggle and a brawl in the chamber.
