Cultism: Ibadan Poly threatens to expel students after arrest of two with ammunition

The management of The Polytechnic Ibadan has warned students against cultism and other criminal activities, following the arrest of two students allegedly found with ammunition.

The institution’s Public Relations Officer, Soladoye Adewole, gave the warning in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, on Monday, March 9, 2026.

Adewole said the students were apprehended through the vigilance of the institution’s security personnel and members of the surrounding community.

Adebowale said: “It is the vigilance of our security personnel and members of the community that led to the arrest.

“Security is about all of us. Even where we live, security is not left to the police alone; it is everyone’s responsibility.

“When people are vigilant, whether at home, in the workplace or anywhere, crime will definitely reduce.”

The polytechnic spokesman added that the students had been handed over to the police for investigation and possible prosecution, since possession of illegal ammunition constituted a criminal offence.

He noted that the institution would also apply its internal disciplinary measures if the suspects returned to the school.

Adebowale said: “It is a criminal offence, and the matter has been handed over to the police. All things being equal, the police will prosecute them.

“Anybody who is found to have engaged in criminal activities automatically loses his or her studentship.

“Even if they are released and come back, they will still face the institution’s disciplinary committee, and the sanction attached is expulsion.”

Adebowale reiterated the institution’s zero tolerance for cult-related activities, noting that the school regularly organise orientation programmes to instill discipline and good conduct among students.

He said such programmes were organised by the management, faculties, departments, and religious bodies on campus.

He, therefore, urged students to focus on their studies and avoid activities that could jeopardise their academic future.
