Diphtheria outbreak kills 10 in Niger

A diphtheria outbreak in Niger State has claimed the lives of at least 10 children in Agaie and Bida local government areas, sparking concerns among residents and health authorities.

The victims were reportedly rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Bida, but succumbed to complications despite medical intervention. Local sources disclosed that additional deaths have occurred in rural communities across the two LGAs, though exact figures are yet to be confirmed.

The situation has fueled panic among residents, many of whom are appealing for urgent government action to halt the spread.

A resident of Bida, who pleaded anonymity, urged the state to immediately provide vaccines and drugs to local hospitals.

“This is a matter of life and death.

“We appeal to the government to urgently supply medications to Bida and Agaie general hospitals to prevent further spread,” the resident said.

Confirming the outbreak, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tertiary Health Care, Mohammed Gana, said the state government, in partnership with health agencies, has activated emergency response measures. He noted that efforts are underway to provide medication, step up surveillance, and contain the infection.

Diphtheria, a highly contagious bacterial disease, attacks the throat and airways and releases toxins capable of damaging the heart, kidneys, and nervous system. It can be fatal if untreated, particularly in children.

The Niger State Ministry of Health has urged parents to ensure their children complete all doses of diphtheria-containing vaccines, while also advising the public to promptly report suspected cases to the nearest health facility.
