A Canada-based Nigerian doctor, Arinze Onwumelu, has advised singer Portable to undergo urgent medical evaluation following his recent celebrity boxing match against skit maker Carter Efe.
The bout, held over the weekend in Lagos, drew significant public attention, with Portable losing after a high-energy contest that quickly went viral on social media.
Reacting in a video shared online, Onwumelu—popularly known as Dr Zo—expressed concern over the level of physical impact sustained by the singer, recommending a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan to check for possible internal head injuries.
He warned that repeated blows to the head could expose Portable to serious conditions such as subdural hematoma, a potentially life-threatening brain injury.
“This was meant to be entertainment, not a fight to cause harm. The intensity was too high for an exhibition match,” he said, questioning whether proper safety guidelines were followed.
The doctor added that the punches delivered during the match could have caused unseen damage, urging those close to the singer to ensure he receives immediate medical attention.
Onwumelu also criticised the organisers of the event, calling for stricter safety measures, including the compulsory use of protective gear such as head guards in future celebrity boxing matches.
Before the fight, Portable had declared himself medically fit and confident of victory, citing his previous wins over rapper Speed Darlington and actor Charles Okocha in similar bouts.
