DSS arrests protest leader in Abuja

The operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) have arrested one of the leaders of the ongoing #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest in Abuja, Micheal Lenin.

It was gathered that DSS arrested Lenin, who is the National Coordinator of the Youth Rights Campaign, at his residence in the Apo area of Abuja at about 2 a.m. on Monday, August 5, 2024.

His arrest was confirmed by the Director of Mobilisation, Take It Back Movement, Damilare Adenola.

Adenola disclosed that Lenin’s house was raided by the DSS, saying the security operatives also assaulted the protest leader during the arrest.

He said: “Lenin has been arrested by the DSS. He was apprehended during a raid on his house at about 2 a.m.

“He was arrested and tortured in the presence of his family. We are demanding his immediate and unconditional release.”

Soyinka to security agents: Be tactical, tear gas is an abuse during protest

Lenin had after President Bola Tinubu’s address to Nigerians on Sunday, August 4, said the protest would continue massively on Monday.

The protest leader called on Nigerians to come out in large numbers to continue the protest against hardship in the country.

“We, therefore, call on Nigerians to come out in large numbers to continue these protests on Monday until our demands are met. The two-pronged approach of violence and propaganda has failed.

“The violence and repressions are just attempts to silence and control us, and the propaganda cannot sway or fool us,” he had said.

The DSS has however yet to speak on Lenin’s arrest as of press time.

President Tinubu had, in a nationwide address, urged protesters to suspend the protest and embrace dialogue.

He said: “Under the circumstances, I enjoin protesters and the organisers to suspend any further protest and create room for dialogue which I have always acceded to, at the slightest opportunity.

“Nigeria requires all hands on deck and needs us all – regardless of age, party, tribe, religion or other divides – to work together in reshaping our destiny as a nation.”
