EFCC arrests ex-lawmaker Kazaure over N70m linked to Emefiele

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested a former member of the House of Representatives, Gudaji Kazaure, over allegations that he received N70 million from former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, Godwin Emefiele.

Kazaure was taken into custody on Wednesday, May 7, shortly after a Kano High Court lifted a restraining order previously preventing his arrest.

A source within the EFCC disclosed that Kazaure allegedly received N20 million in two separate payments through an intermediary named Mr. Eric, reportedly sent by Emefiele, to purchase Sallah rams.

The former lawmaker is currently being held at the EFCC’s Kano office and may be transferred to Abuja for further investigation and possible prosecution.

This development comes amid lingering controversy stemming from Kazaure’s public accusations in December 2022, when he claimed that N89.1 trillion in stamp duty revenues were missing under Emefiele’s leadership at the CBN.

He further alleged that a presidential committee formed to probe the matter was prevented from submitting its findings.

However, the presidency, through then-spokesman Garba Shehu, dismissed Kazaure’s allegations as false, stating that the committee had long been dissolved.
