EFCC declares ex-pension boss Maina wanted over fresh allegation

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has declared former Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Pension Reforms, Abdulrasheed Maina, wanted over an alleged case of receiving stolen property.

The EFCC made the declaration in a notice issued on Wednesday and signed by its Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale.

The commission identified Maina, 61, as an indigene of Biu, Borno State, and urged anyone with information about his whereabouts to contact its offices across the country or the nearest police station.

“The public is hereby notified that Abdularasheed Abdullahi Maina, whose photograph appears above, is wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in an alleged case of receiving stolen property,” the commission said.

The EFCC listed its offices in Abuja, Lagos, Kano, Kaduna, Maiduguri, Ibadan, Uyo, Sokoto, Benin, Makurdi, Ilorin, Enugu, Gombe and Port Harcourt as points where information could be provided.

It also provided a telephone contact and its official email address, info@efcc.gov.ng, for members of the public with information that could assist in locating him.

The commission did not disclose details of the alleged stolen property case, including the nature of the property involved or when the alleged offence occurred.

Maina has previously faced prosecution over allegations connected to the management of pension funds. He was convicted by a Federal High Court in Abuja in November 2021 and sentenced to eight years in prison for money laundering offences involving about N2 billion.

The Court of Appeal later upheld his conviction and sentence in 2023.

The Nigerian Correctional Service subsequently confirmed that Maina was released on February 25, 2025, after benefiting from statutory remission based on the period he had already spent in custody and his conduct while incarcerated.

The latest EFCC declaration marks a fresh development in the former pension task force chairman’s long-running legal battles.
