El-Rufai to remain in custody as court adjourns bail hearing to March 31

The Federal High Court in Kaduna has adjourned the bail hearing of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai to March 31, 2026, ordering that he remain in custody pending the ruling.

El-Rufai was arraigned on Tuesday over allegations of public property conversion and money laundering brought against him by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

He arrived at the court premises at about 9:00 a.m. in a Hilux vehicle under heavy security presence and was later escorted into the courtroom after a brief wait.

During proceedings, his counsel, Ukpon Akpan, urged the court to grant bail to enable the former governor to prepare his defence.

However, the prosecution opposed the request, arguing that granting bail could hinder ongoing investigations.

El-Rufai’s lawyers accuse ICPC of rights violations, fabrication ahead of charges

El-Rufai has been in ICPC custody since February 19, 2026, following his release by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)

His continued detention has sparked calls from various quarters demanding either his release or formal arraignment.

While in custody, he has reportedly declined to answer investigators’ questions, invoking his right to remain silent.
