Falana: ASUU strike’ll end soon

Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, has said the lingering strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will be called off in days and not weeks.

Falana, who is the counsel to ASUU, said this at the book launch titled, ‘Breaking Coconut With Your Head’, by Lanre Arogundade in Lagos on Monday.

The revered lawyer stated that it is likely that the issues ASUU is having with the Federal Government would be resolved and the strike concluded outside the courtroom.

The union embarked on the industrial action on February 14, 2022, to press home an improved academic environment and welfare of members.

Some of the lecturers’ demands are the funding of the Revitalisation of Public Universities, Earned Academic Allowances, University Transparency Accountability Solution (UTAS), and promotion arrears.

Others are the renegotiation of the 2009 ASUU-FG Agreement and the inconsistency in the Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System.

Several meetings between ASUU and the Federal Government have ended in deadlock due to non-agreement on the demands.

The Federal Government later went to court to challenge the strike but the union insisted it would not resume until its demands are met by the government.
