The family of Amina Muhammad, a young expectant mother, is set to sue Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) over alleged medical negligence that led to her death following a Caesarean Section (CS) on Sunday.
According to her relatives, Amina was admitted to the hospital last Friday but faced delays due to the hospital’s insistence on securing blood pints before surgery. Despite the eventual operation, her condition reportedly deteriorated post-surgery.
“She had breathing difficulties after the CS and was placed on manual oxygen. Later, she was connected to a concentrator, but there was no power to run it,” said her elder sister, who also alleged that AKTH lacked a functional blood bank and stable power supply.
The family further claimed that hospital staff were unprofessional and failed to show empathy, refusing repeated requests to transfer Amina to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Instead, she was returned to the labor room, where her condition worsened.
“We’ve contacted human rights lawyers. This kind of negligence shouldn’t be allowed to continue,” the sister added.
In response, the hospital’s Public Relations Officer, Hajia Hauwa Inuwa Dutse, confirmed that the deceased’s medical file had been submitted to the hospital management for review.
“The case is being thoroughly investigated, and the public will be informed once findings are available,” she stated.
