Fayemi inaugurates digital vehicle inspection centre in Ekiti

Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti on Thursday inaugurated an ultramodern Computerised Vehicle Inspection Office to ensure accuracy and efficiency in vehicle inspection process.

Fayemi, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Chief Bisi Egbeyemi, while performing the inauguration of the office in Ado-Ekiti described the digital vehicle inspection centre as a landmark project that would reduce automobile accidents in the state.

He said the centre had state-of-the-art facilities and the capacity to inspect between 150 and 160 vehicles in a day.

With the inauguration of the Centre located in Ado Ekiti the state now joins three other states in the federation that have gone digital in vehicle inspection process.

Fayemi said vehicle inspection used to be done manually before the construction of the digital vehicle inspection office, describing the manual inspection as very tedious.

He noted that manual vehicle inspection also gave room for loopholes in the collection of revenue and impeded transparency and accountability.

He said his administration had invested enormously in road and transportation sector with construction and reconstruction of roads across the three senatorial districts to make life easier for the motoring public.

According to him, the roads include: Ilupeju-Ire-Igbemo-Ijan Road; Oye-Ikun-Otun Road; Agbado-Ode-Isinbode-Omuo Road; Aramoko-Erijiyan-Ikogosi Road; Ilawe-Igbara Odo-Ibuji Road; and new Ado-Iyin Road.

The governor said that work had resumed on Ado-Ifaki Road, while work was ongoing on the International Agro Cargo Airport which would put Ekiti on global economic map when completed.

“This computerised vehicle inspection office which was a product of a Public Private Partnership arrangement has great advantages.

“These include digital compilation of records of all vehicles in Ekiti State, it will boost Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), easier determination of road worthiness of vehicles and drastic reduction of accidents on our roads,” Fayemi said.

The Managing Director of Temple SYC Limited, Mr. Segun Obayendo, the firm that handled the project, said the Fayemi-led administration has bequeathed a worthy legacy to the people of Ekiti State to make access to vehicle inspection easier.

Obayendo explained that vehicle inspection had gone digital and states in Nigeria should not take a back seat to ensure a seamless and result-oriented exercise.

Commissioner for Works and Transportation, Mr. Sola Adebayo, explained that the Centre was equipped with machines, computers and digital equipment that could comprehensively carry out inspection with precision and give accurate report on conditions of such vehicles.

The inauguration of the complex was attended by stakeholders in the transport sub-sector including officers of Federal Road Safety Corps, Ekiti Internal Revenue Service, Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (REAN), National Union of Road Transport Workers(NURTW) and the Nigeria Police.
