FCTA, youths launch ‘Breathe Clean Air Abuja’ campaign in schools, markets

Efforts by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) to combat air pollution have received a major boost as a youth advocacy group has taken the campaign to schools and markets across Abuja.

The initiative, tagged “Breathe Clean Air Abuja,” is a flagship public-private partnership project under the leadership of FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, and is scheduled for launch on November 13.

The campaign aims to raise awareness about the dangers of using charcoal and firewood stoves while promoting the adoption of cleaner cooking methods using Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG). It targets 5,000 households across the six area councils of the FCT, particularly in underserved communities.

The advocacy team, led by Ms. Daniella Omotola, a Rotaractor and environmental advocate, visited major markets and schools to distribute flyers and engage students and traders on the importance of clean energy and environmental protection.

The group comprised members of Rotaract Clubs in the FCT and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members.

Declaring the youth-focused campaign open in Abuja, the Mandate Secretary of the FCTA Health Services and Environment Secretariat, Dr. Dolapo Fasawe, said the administration was partnering with Rotaract Clubs and other stakeholders to sensitize young people on the dangers of air pollution and the need to embrace clean energy.

She said the collaboration was aimed at expanding the campaign’s reach among youths and inspiring behavioral change that supports environmental sustainability.

Speaking during the outreach, Omotola said the group was committed to mobilizing young Nigerians to take the lead in protecting the environment.

“Air pollution affects our planet and our lives. As youths, we must get involved in whatever needs to be done to protect our environment,” she said.

She added that the campaign would engage students through competitions, debates, poem recitations, talent hunts, and social media challenges, as well as the formation of environmental clubs, with incentives and prizes for outstanding participants.

Omotola expressed appreciation to Minister Nyesom Wike and Dr. Dolapo Fasawe for supporting the initiative and entrusting the youths with a central role in the campaign.
