Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo Kuti has been posthumously honoured with the Recording Academy of America’s Lifetime Achievement Award, becoming the first African to receive the prestigious recognition.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced the honour in a statement, describing Fela as more than a musician but a fearless advocate for justice, freedom and social change whose legacy continues to shape global music and inspire generations.
According to the President, Fela’s courage, creativity and unwavering conviction made him a revolutionary figure who used his art to confront oppression and challenge authority, while redefining the soundscape of modern African music.
Tinubu noted that the award affirms Fela’s enduring global influence and recognises his foundational role in the evolution of Afrobeat, a genre that has influenced generations of Nigerian artistes and contributed significantly to the rise of Afrobeats on the world stage.
He added that Fela’s impact transcends music, portraying him as a cultural icon whose message of resistance and liberation remains relevant decades after his death.
“Fela lives,” the President declared, emphasising that the legend’s spirit and legacy remain eternal.
