The Federal Government has reaffirmed that Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, remains safe for residents and visitors, dismissing concerns raised in a recent travel advisory issued by the United States Embassy.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, gave the assurance in a statement released on Monday, following the U.S. Embassy’s decision to restrict its personnel and their families from visiting military and government facilities in the Federal Capital Territory for non-official purposes.
While acknowledging the right of foreign missions to issue such advisories, Idris emphasized that there is no specific or imminent threat within the FCT to warrant panic.
“Abuja remains safe for citizens, residents, and visitors alike.
“Our security agencies are working round the clock to safeguard lives and property,” the Minister stated.
He noted that the security architecture in Abuja has been proactive and successful in preventing and neutralizing potential threats.
The minister also clarified that the U.S. advisory appeared to be based on general global developments, not intelligence tied to any particular risk in Nigeria.
Reiterating the government’s commitment to security, Idris urged all diplomatic missions, investors, and development partners not to be alarmed.
“Abuja continues to stand as one of the most secure capitals in the world. We encourage the public to go about their lawful activities without fear while remaining vigilant and reporting any suspicious activity,” he added.
The minister assured that security and intelligence agencies remain on high alert and are fully prepared to respond to any threat as it arises.
