FG inaugurates minimum wage committee Tuesday

The Federal Government will on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, inaugurate a 37-man tripartite committee on national minimum wage with a mandate to recommend a new minimum wage for the country.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, who made this known via a statement on Sunday, January 28, said the planned inauguration of the minimum wage committee is sequel to the approval of President Bola Tinubu.

Akume, in a statement issued by his spokesman, Segun Imohiosen, stated that the inauguration would be held at the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Tuesday.

The committee under the chairmanship of the former Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Bukar Goni Aji, cut across the federal government, state government, private sector, and organised labour.

From the federal government, the members include Nkeiruka Onyejeocha; Minister of State, Labour and Employment (Representing Minister of Labour and Employment); Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun; Minister of Budget Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu; Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Dr Yemi Esan; Permanent Secretary, GSO. OSGF, Dr. Nnamdi Maurice Mbaeri; and Chairman/CEO of NSIWC – Member/Secretary, Ekpo Nta.

From the state government, the members of the committee are Governor Mohammed Umar Bago of Niger State – representative from North-Central;  Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State – representative from North-East;  Governor Umar Dikko Radda of Katsina State – representative from North-West; Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State – representative from South-East; Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State – representative from South-West;  Governor Otu Bassey Edet of Cross River State – representative from South-South.

The membership from the organised labour includes the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero; Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja, Comrade Prince Adeyanju Adewale, Comrade Ambali Akeem Olatunji, Comrade Benjamin Anthony, and Prof. Theophilius Ndukuba.

The membership from the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria includes the TUC President, Comrade Festus Osifo; Deputy President I, Comrade Tommy Etim Okon; Deputy President II, Comrade Kayode Surajudeen Alakija; Deputy President III, Comrade Jimoh Oyibo; Secretary-General, Comrade Nuhu A. Toro; and Chairperson Women Communication, Comrade Hafusatu Shuaib.
