The Federal Government has issued a stern warning to Nigerians against being lured into illegal recruitment for foreign armed conflicts.
Authorities expressed concern over a growing trend of citizens being deceived with promises of lucrative jobs, educational opportunities, and migration incentives, only to be sent into combat zones.
In a statement on Sunday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said investigations and security reports indicate that some Nigerians have been misled into signing military contracts under false pretences.
Victims were reportedly pressured into agreements in foreign languages, with some having their travel documents confiscated upon arrival.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses grave concern over the rising cases of Nigerian citizens being illegally recruited to participate in foreign armed conflicts,” said spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa.
The government highlighted that intermediaries often facilitate travel arrangements using tourist or non-military visas.
Nigerians who engage in such activities outside official government approval could face serious legal and security consequences, the statement added.
The ministry urged citizens to verify overseas job or academic opportunities through official channels and report suspicious recruitment activities. It also called on parents, guardians, community leaders, and educational institutions to educate young Nigerians about these risks.
Recent reports suggest that some Nigerians were recruited under the pretext of security jobs in Russia and later deployed to the war in Ukraine, with some fatalities reported. The Russian Ambassador to Nigeria, Andrey Podyolyshev, denied any official involvement, saying illegal recruitment efforts were not connected to the Russian government.
The Federal Government said it remains committed to protecting the safety and welfare of Nigerians at home and abroad.
