FIFA confirms DR Congo for World Cup play-off, ending Super Eagles’ 2026 hopes

FIFA has confirmed DR Congo as Africa’s representative in the inter-confederation play-off tournament, effectively ending Nigeria’s bid to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The football governing body released an accreditation notice to journalists on Wednesday, detailing the six-nation tournament format, which will determine the final two spots for the World Cup set to be held in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

DR Congo’s inclusion leaves no room for Nigeria, whose football federation had challenged the outcome of their November 2025 CAF play-off clash.

The Super Eagles lost to DR Congo on penalties after a 1-1 draw, prompting the Nigeria Football Federation to lodge a formal protest alleging that DR Congo fielded ineligible players.

FIFA confirmed that the six teams competing in the play-off tournament are Bolivia, DR Congo, Iraq, Jamaica, New Caledonia, and Suriname.

The tournament is scheduled to kick off on March 26.

This development marks a bitter end to Nigeria’s World Cup campaign, leaving the Super Eagles’ 2026 hopes dashed.
